Questions and Answers: New NHS Contract

Q: What is this new contract all about?
A: It is a new Government initiative to cut costs. Dentists will no longer be paid for the fillings they do, but be given a tight budget a bit like a fund holding GP. Once the budget is spent for the year treatments may have to be cancelled or postponed. There is no right of appeal.

Q: How will you spend the budget?
A: We will prioritise those who have most need, mainly children.

Q: Can I still be registered with the practice?
A: All existing NHS patients will cease to be registered on 1st April at every UK practice. The new arrangements allow for people to attend for a course of treatment when they need and subject to the dentist having enough capacity to see them and some of the remaining budget. You may request to see a specific dentist, but if their list is full you may have to transfer to someone else. Either where you normally go or where there is spare capacity. This does not affect Independent, Private or Denplan patients.

Q: Will I still be able to have my 6 monthly check-up?
A: Not automatically on the NHS. The dentist will be under pressure to increase the interval between checkups for anything up to 2 years. This is how the government hopes to spread out the budget; we are totally opposed to this, but may be forced to make a charge for some appointments at shorter intervals. Specific times may be reserved for NHS treatment.

Q: I pay a fee for NHS treatment will I be affected?
A: Yes, we will not be able to treat any fee paying NHS patients. Please ask about our Independent fees which can be very affordable when compared with the new NHS charges.

Q: Are you taking on any new patients?
A: Yes! We are happy to see new patients. Subject to the budget and examination, we would hope to continue to see children within the NHS and adults Independently, Privately or on Denplan. We would give priority to children who have siblings and parents who attend the practice.
